On December 3rd 2018, AWS announced a 60% improvement of their SSD (gp2) volume maximum from 10,000 IOPS to 16,000 IOPS. Throughput also increased from 160 MB/s to 250 MB/s.
What isn’t mentioned is that it’s not automatically applied to your existing volumes, if you haven’t already carried out the process below, then get to it.
In short: Any existing gp2 volume over 3333GiB can benefit from this improvement with a little love and attention at zero cost to you.
Below you will see two identically sized volumes, however one was born before December 3rd 2018. All you need to do is modify your old existing gp2 volume to the same gp2 volume, sounds a little strange, but if you follow the steps below you can obtain your performance boost within a flash:
- Select a gp2 volume over 3333GiB with IOPS set to 10000.
- Modify the volume to inherit the new IOPS (Keep your volume type and size the same).
- Within an instant your IOPS is increased up to a maximum of 16000 (Size * 3)
- Enjoy your faster volume at no additional cost.
